177564_$7 Off on Purchase Over $250      I wasn't feeling well recently, I have colds and a sore throat that seem to be hanging around for a while.  I was thinking that gee even if I try to have a healthy lifestyle, I still get sick. No one really is immune to any kind of sickness. Other people are perhaps more prone to it and others have strong resistance to some kind of illnesses but certainly, we cannot be spared from sickness at some point in our lives.  However, we can at least do something to prevent it or at least reduce the risk of getting it. As I was browsing through the internet I found useful resources on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle,  I have compiled some of them below:

1. 10 Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle .  This article discusses the benefits of eating beetroot, having a good exercise regime, embracing healthy relationships, avoiding sugary and salty foods, getting out in the sun, eating small portions, take 10,000 and more steps in a day and so on and so forth.  If you want to read more about it, please check it here.

2.  Healthy Eating.  According to the Heart Foundation, its never too late to start improving the way we eat, and by lowering our saturated fat intake we will also maintain a healthy heart. This site provides useful information on food and nutrition, give recommendations on how to prepare food and give suggested approach to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight and have the energy we need in our daily living.

3. Tips for Healthy Living on the Go.  Some useful tips here include drinking lots of water, eat fruits regularly, drink herbal tea, do exercise on the go, eating nuts, exercise deep breathing, etc.

4. Tips to Healthy Eating by Michelle Bridges.  Here is a very practical and useful advise from Michelle Bridges.  From careful planning of your meals, to preparing healthy snacks, removing the temptations in the house and more.

5.  Healthy Eating Tips for Kids and Adults. They emphasize the importance of eating breakfast and eating nutritious foods. They also suggested to maintain a good balance of exercise and food intake.

Live Healthy, Live Happy, Play With Kids!

Love Being a Kid Again, Love Playing With My Kids

Two little kids giggled and ran and hid as my husband walked in the room to talk to me. The hiding place was behind me, one hiding behind my leg, and the other one behind my back. They often do that because they are assured that I would protect them, protect them from Daddy's tickles and so I thought. So my husband said to our three year-old daughter, "you count while we hide". He hid and jumped out as she walked past where he sat out of sight. She smiled as she exclaimed, “Daddy you scared me!” Then it was her brother’s turn to count. The game was short and sweet, but they loved every minute of it and my husband and I enjoyed it too. It feels great to be a kid again.

Play is not just for kids. Do you agree with that phrase?  I do. We all know that play can be a good  source of stimulation for our brain and our body, that's why we encourage our kids to learn through play. We also motivate them to learn by doing fun activities with them.  Other times, we just let them be kids and play, let them discover new things, be creative and use their own imagination. My daughter is very good at it, she use all sort of kitchen stuff and even invaded my personal pouch bag one time to create her own art work.  Sometimes she does pretend play and utilizes whatever things she can find in the kitchen to create her own pretend dish of the day. I don't like the mess, but I'm always impress of her creativity. My husband and I always end up laughing and wonder where she got the idea from. Its tough being a parent, but true indeed spending time and playing with kids are the best way to release the stresses of the day :)

Eat Right, Protect Your Skin!

Eat right, Protect your Skin from the Sun!

My husband have had a couple of bouts of skin cancer over the years even though he is relatively young.   He has been good at protecting his skin from the sun's ultra violet rays since he was young.  He always wore protective clothing, a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses and always uses sunscreen every time he goes out in the sun. But because he has the skin type that seems to be susceptible to skin cancers, he has still gotten them.  His grandmother and mother have suffered in the same way.  My mother in law always tells him "EAT RIGHT!"

My husband's parents have been  firm believers of treating skin cancers in a natural way, so they learned from a Naturopath that the key to avoiding a lot of skin cancers is to "be careful with what you eat". Apparently, sugars can aggravate the presence of skin cancers.  The Naturopath said that when we eat a lot of artificial things and processed sugars they come out on the surface of our skin and these sugars react with the ultra violet rays of the sun and do the damage to our skin.  Moreover, we must clean up our blood stream as this is how the good and the bad elements in our diets travel around our body. My husband has used black salve or blood root paste successfully a number of times.  He said the treatment was really painful and brutal at times, but has had good results.  On smaller skin cancers the scar is not really noticeable.  In any case it seems to have worked and as we see it, it saved his life.  So remember, live healthy, eat right, protect your skin from the sun. Cheers to the many healthy days ahead of us all.

Finding Solace in Poetry

Do you find solace in poetry? I do. I used to write poems whenever I feel sad, upset and hurt. Sometimes, I do it just for fun and at some point I used it as an escape from doing research work when I was still a struggling post graduate student. Poetry became my venting vessel, it became an expression of self and of the many emotions left unsaid. For some people poetry can be a stress relief and for some, it can be a means to get well like this guy in the article Poetry for Health and Healing.

The other day, as I was contemplating on writing a poem again, I remembered I have compiled some poems in poetry.com website.  I think I have a couple posted in the website but when I started to retrieve them, they have already moved my poems into an "old files archive" so I tried retrieving them one by one. But before I can retrieve one poem, they asked me make a review of two poems and so I did.  I have only managed to give reviews to 4 poems and was able to claim back two of my poems. I will have to sit down and do more reviewing before I can recover all of my poems. Here is one of my favorite poems written 10 years ago.

"Sentiments"

A murky autumn diffusing desolation
I breathe, the air intoxicating my fortitude

I swallow, the solids filling my woes,

Liquids derisorily running through my veins

\The twinge screams of withdraw,

Lying awake with nothing to hold,

Absence, glaringly creeping through my senses,
I dream in total delusion
and wait in vain with no one to cling on
\I weep, with tears of desertion
I whine, I grief in disbelief
I surrender with utter plea,
Dumping strides of time, I flee

How about you? Is there a Poet in you? Why not try writing one poem today?

Live Healthy! Appreciate Your Daily Little Blessings!

"Free Kitchen Stuff Made My Day!

There are a lot of things to be grateful for in our lives.  We have our everyday little blessings, a smile of a child, a phone call from a friend, receiving a birthday card or a present, reading a good book, a good conversation, receiving an email, a nice cup of tea, a good meal, a cuddle from a loved one and the list goes on.  Yesterday, I received a beautiful set of kitchen stuff for free, I jokingly told my husband "it made my day".  But what is it really that made my day? Was it the free stuff or was it the way I was able to get my free stuff?  I think the free kitchen stuff was only a small part of it, but the most important part of the day was the blessing of family and friends.  I would not be able to get those stuff if not for the support of my wonderful family and friends.  I did host a party, yes I did host a "Tupperware" party, that's why I got some cool Tupperware stuff for free. Thanks to the blessings of friends and family.

Today, as I was checking out a friend's post on Facebook, I chanced upon this beautiful video, and its one of the best additions to my blessed morning.  Have a look and be blessed as well.

Art and Health!

Live Healthy, Appreciate Beauty!

The other day I had the chance to visit a local art exhibition. I am not much of an artist but I do appreciate art. I like looking at them and love visiting art galleries. I am quite fascinated by the artist’s intricate use of brush strokes to form shapes and  mix colours to paint a subject that creates a certain visual effect. I have realised that looking at a certain piece of art develops a certain kind of emotion. In most cases, I feel a sense of value knowing that the artists are imparting a part of themselves and imparting the beauty of their subjects. At other times I feel a sense of nostalgia or sadness. But the most interesting feeling I have whenever I see a piece of art is a sense of peace and relaxation.  I know I feel happy looking at Van Gogh's works so the "Van Gogh book by Josephine Cuttis and James Smith" given by my husband a couple of years ago comes in handy whenever I feel like I need some visual means of relaxation. It is very informative too.

Interested in more books about Van Gogh? Check them here.

A sample of one of the Oriental themed paintings at the local Exhibition
that evoked a sense of nostalgia for me.

Interestingly enough, research shows that different colors have different effects on body and mind and they can provide relaxation to the person looking at it. The same effects can be found when a person looks at a painting or a certain piece of art.  They also noted that it can evoke peacefulness and provide stress relief to the person looking at a certain painting. So what are you waiting for? Look at a painting or better yet visit a local art gallery now! :)

Are you ready for NRL 2013?

I just finished watching the Superbowl.  I am almost getting the hang of how they play American football.  Now it is time for the real action, Rugby League! (Mind you I also like my Rugby Union and soccer.)

Is this the year of the Shark?

I love my football and have listened to all the controversies.  Despite all this, it could be the Sharkies year.  For years the Cronulla Sharks fans have suffered the pain of defeat even with strong sides and our team choking in the finals series.  But, this could be our year.  Just look at some of the new recruits and quality retentions.

·        Jonathon Wright
·        Beau Ryan
·        The addition of a few more quality forwards
·        Retention of some quality halves.
It was an unfortunate loss with Jeremy Smith, but these things happen.
Go the sharkies in 2013. Make this our year!

Having a Tough Day?

     Sound Advice!

All of us, at some point in out lives feel sad, depressed, vulnerable, alone, disappointed, upset or even angry.  There are circumstances that sometimes lead to us to feel that the whole world is against us.    It's one of those days that we cling on to something that gives us comfort and something that will at least cheer us up.  There are daily obstacles that can be easily handled and we feel that we are just fine and we can easily just brush our problems off and move on with our lives.

But how do you deal with your bad days really?  Every time, I feel down, upset or just being grumpy for whatever reason, my husband will always have a spot on 'one liner advice" like "You are perhaps just tired, go get some sleep" or he will just try to cheer me up by just sharing a joke or two or by just trying to make me laugh by tickling me and most of the time they work :) Most of the time though, he would just say "tough day, be tougher"

Tough day, be tougher!

There is a book called, “Eat, pray, love.”  I have never read the book, and probably never will.  However, I do believe in eating well (as healthy as possible).  I also believe in praying and acting with loving kindness.  The key I have found is to never let it get you down.  Be tougher than what is thrown at you.  Be prepared to roll with the punches.  Then get up, have a good feed, forget about it by praying about it, then be with someone who loves you. ~ P.M.K.

My Hubby Has a Two Pack

564533_125x125 - Work Out

Want to start a 60-day body workout? Try INSANITY!

My husband bought a range of exercise machines and discovered the following:

  1. buying an exercise machine does not mean he will use it;
  2. having an exercise machine does not mean he will use it but ...
  3. having  strict discipline and finding a routine he enjoys and sticking to it has proven to be successful.

Abdoer Twist
Boxing bag

He has lost 5 kilograms so far and intends to lose more. Every day he chooses a machine and exercises on it.  He chooses the muscles he wishes to target (more often than not at the moment, his stomach) and targets that group of muscles.  At other times he stretches his body (The Abdoer Twist is great for this).  His boxing bag is great for cardio work and soon has him working up a sweat. I now can see that he has a two pack and is on his way to having a six pack :)

Gardening for Health 101!

565595_TheLAShop.com 125x125 Banner

All Natural – Discover the joy of GROWING YOUR OWN’

It cannot be argued that vegetable gardens provide food full of nutrition fit for our diets.  But that's not the only benefit we get out of establishing our own vegetable garden. Research shows that relaxation and stress reduction could also be one of the benefits of gardening.  I have also recently found out (having been involve in a voluntary capacity to interact with a student with disability and special needs once a week at a local school) that gardening provides heaps of learning experiences and benefits to kids with special needs. Moreover, they have also noted the healing effects of gardening for some people who suffer from depression.

         While we have been doing backyard gardening for a while now, just recently, out in the pouring rain we discovered the joy of GROWING OUR OWN vegetables.  It was very  good feeling to pick what we had planted and nurture them to life.  For a while now we have regularly planted in season vegetables to pick and put on the table.  We have grown several vegetables in the past such as pumpkins, pak-choy, lettuce, snow peas, beans, tomatoes, capsicum and our most recent success, cucumbers.  Its a simple regime of ;

  • Regular watering
  •  Weed removal
  • Checking for and treating pests and diseases
A very basic and simple gardening routine to ensure a healthy and regular vegetable harvest, and they taste great too!  We have enjoyed a beautiful crisp cucumber and tomato salsa the other night. If you would like to try my simple recipe please check my new food blog here.

Staying Fit with Zumba

Stay Fit Stay Active!  Let's do the Zumba!

One of the keys to staying fit and healthy is regular exercise. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance routine that can be done in 15-30 minutes a day and it works perfectly for a Mum like me. I can see results that work as you work. I love dancing so I find it really enjoyable as well. It helps reduce your body fat and increase your muscle tone.  It really works if you persist in using the set routines. It is easy to follow. Get active! Get excited! Get fit! Burn the calories! Involve the kids! Get into the music and the movement!
